5 Reasons not to drink Fluorinated Water

5 Reasons not to drink Fluorinated Water

If you grew up in the United States, having fluoride in your tap water was a very common occurrence. Most people would have never known that this was not the case in other countries around the world. We were always told that it was for our teeth. We were lucky to have fluoride in our water because it would help us have fewer cavities.

Uniquely American Fluoridation

Little did any of us know that lacing drinking water with fluoride was mostly unique to the U.S. The only other country putting fluoride in their water at such a high percentage was Ireland. As of 2010 66.2% of the total population in America had fluoride added to their drinking water while 73.9% of those receiving a community water supply did.[1] More people in the United States are drinking fluorinated water than the rest of the world combined.[2]

Why is it that America continues to do this when 97% of Western Europe and countries like Japan have rejected putting fluoride in their water?[3] Is there something they don’t know that we do, or is it the other way around? Sound the Alarm people! Fluoride is a toxin! Thousands of medical professionals and scientists from around the world have banned together to try and get this point across.[4] Why in the world are we allowing the government to put a toxin in our drinking water?

How did this happen?

Adding fluoride to our drinking water is not something new. It started back in the 1940’s when we were adding lead to our gasoline, when asbestos lined our plumbing pipes, and DDT was considered safe enough to be sprayed on kids. All of these chemicals have been taken off the market yet we still fluoridate our water.

The US government has not wavered over the past 65 years regarding their story as to how safe and effective fluoride is. The irony of the whole matter is that in 1944 the American Dental Association (ADA) published their findings stating that putting fluoride in our water was not worth the risk. [5] The following year Grand Rapids, Michigan was the first municipality that started adding fluoride to their water. This might have been the end of it if it weren’t for the fact that the aluminum industry was looking to get rid of their waste product, Hydrofluosilicic Acid. .

Government and Business Join

What followed was typical for government and big business. The ever so holy alliance was struck between the two when Oscar Ewing, a former attorney for Alcoa (one of the biggest Aluminum companies in the U.S.), became head of the U.S. Public Health Service. Private industry meets and joins together with the government and inevitably there is deal of some sort that is supposed to help the citizens of our society. The fact that fluoride was toxic never entered the mind of the average citizen. Why was it that this waste product was prohibited from being dumped in the ocean, but it was ok for our drinking water?

Fluoridation Becomes the Norm

This is when the process of fluoridation of our water supply took off dramatically. I know you will find this hard to believe, but ALCOA was generously paying Ewing $750,000 to promote the fluoridation campaign in Washington D.C. What better way was there to get rid of the aluminum’s company waste products than to sell them?

If the aluminum company was good enough at deceiving themselves, they might have even been capable of convincing themselves that they were performing a public service. It should be no surprise then that the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) all endorse the use of fluoride in drinking water. The CDC has gone so far as labeling this one of the top 10 measures of public health in the 20th century.[6]

Questioning the Good of Fluoridation

Despite this, there are so many arguments against fluoridating water that some communities around the country have taken to removing it from their water supply on their own. David Kennedy, DDS (former president of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) has stated, “Water fluoridation is the single largest case of scientific fraud, promoted by the government, supported by taxpayer dollars, aided and abetted by the ADA and the AMA, in the history of the planet.”[7] Since 2010 there have been over 70 cities that have stopped fluoridating their water.[8]

What exactly are they adding?

When it comes to the fluoride in our water, it is not the same fluoride that we find in our toothpaste. The fluoride that is added to our water is in the form of Hydrofluosilicic Acid. This is a fluorine compound that is a byproduct of the fertilizer and aluminum industries. It is scraped from the smoke stacks of the industries that are selling it to these communities. This product has never been tested to see what its side effects are. You have to seriously ask yourself do we want to be ingesting a waste product scraped out of a smoke stack. Furthermore, if this is a waste product, what are its dangers? It was not until recently that people started asking these questions and start taking action to get the fluoride removed from their water.

What is wrong with Fluoride ?

1. It is Unethical

It is not lost on anyone that the FDA has declared Fluoride a drug.[9] There is something inherently wrong with this whole idea. Putting a drug in our drinking water amounts to mass medicating everyone. The standard practice for any medication is to haveinformed consent. Lack of informed consent is one of the key reasons Europe has turned down the fluoridation of their water. [10] We are allowing our government to do something that we won’t allow any physician to do, medicate a patient without their consent.

Furthermore, even if this were ethical to put in the water, once it is placed in the water there is no controlling how much people get. People can drink as much water as they want and we have no way of knowing how much fluoride they are getting. Laborers, sports persons and people with kidney problems will be more likely to drink more water and thus get more fluoride. How do we know this is safe? We don’t and this is the problem. The same is true for children who should not be getting fluoride in any amount. What is to stop them from drinking as much water as they want? Since when do we allow people to take a drug in unmeasured amounts?

2. It Doesn’t Work

Although people have assumed that fluoride does work to reduce cavities, the research does not back this up. A study done in New Zealand showed that there was no benefit in using water with fluoride.[11] Those without the fluoridated water did not have any more cavities than those who were using it. Other studies have borne this out. One such study, published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) (2008), reported that if there were any evidence it was weak and inconclusive.[12]

There was one multi-million dollar study done but the National Institute of Health (NIH) in which they found no significant correlation between fluoride ingestion and tooth decay.[13] This study was the first time that one’s exposure to fluoride was correlated with tooth decay; prior to this it had only been whether someone resided in a community with fluoridated water. The most interesting proof that fluoride does not work to prevent cavities is the fact that when fluoride is taken out of the drinking water there is no increase in them. [14]

3. It Kills Brain Cells & Lowers IQ

As far as animal research on the relationship between fluoride and one’s brain, Dr. Connett examined more than 100 such studies as far back as 1941; all of them linked fluoride to brain damage.[15] Human studies also indicate similar findings. In 2006 a study done by the National Academy of science found that fluoride disrupts hormones in one’s body which in turn not only causes problems with people’s thyroids but also has the capacity to cause a decrease in children’s IQ.[16]

Another study conducted by Phyllis Mullinex, a neurotoxicist out of Boston, studied the effects of fluoride on the brain of rats and found that it was responsible for “hypo-activity, memory, and IQ problems.[17] A total of 50 studies looking at the relationship between fluoride and human intelligence have been completed by February of 2015. Forty five of them found that an elevated fluoride level was associated with a lower IQ.[18] Harvard scientists reviewing this data stated that how fluoride affects a child’s brain should become a high research priority. To this day this have not happened. Does this surprise you?

4. May Cause Cancer (Osteosarcoma)

Although there is much controversy over this, there is no lack of evidence to show there is a strong correlation between fluoride and cancer, specifically osteosarcoma in boys. Elise Beth Bassin found that “for males less than twenty years old fluoride in drinking water during growth is associated with an increased risk of osteosarcoma.” [19] Another study done on animals, funded by the U.S. government, found that the larger the dose of fluoride the greater the chance of a male rats developing osteosarcoma.[20] Although the National Cancer Institute reviewed cancer data in the U.S. and found a correlation between individuals living in fluoridated areas and higher rates of osteosarcoma than those living in non-fluorinated areas, they were never able to draw a causal relationship. [21] Other studies were also conducted that failed to show a significant causal relationship but this does not mean one does not exist.

The evidence :

This is not the end of the story however; there are three reasons why osteosarcoma may be a plausible side effect of too much fluoride:

· Fluoride has been shown to accumulate at high levels in the bone

  • Fluoride stimulates bone growth

· Fluoride has been shown to cause chromosome damage in the bones [22]

It is quite clear that more research needs to be done on this if we are going to continue to expose our young men to such high doses of fluoride.

5. Causes damage to thyroid Gland

An interesting historical fact is that in the middle of the 20th century European doctors used to prescribe fluoride to reduce the activity of the thyroid gland for those who had hyperthyroidism.[23] It was estimated that a daily dosage of 5 to 10 mg daily would help reduce someone’s overactive thyroid and this is what doctors prescribed.[24] One would think that if doctors were prescribing this at a specific dose to lower thyroid function then having it in our water would do the same. One study done in Ukraine by Bachinskii (1985) found that 2.3ppm of fluoride in water caused a decrease in thyroid gland in those who were not sick.

Is it hard to imagine why so many people in the U.S. and in other fluorinated countries has increased cases of hypothyroidism? The symptoms of hypothyroidism include weight gain, fatigue, muscle and joint pains, heart disease, increased cholesterol levels, and depression. It is no wonder that Synthroid (used to treat hypothyroidism) is one of the most prescribed drugs here in the U.S. Do we really want to be causing our glands to become diseased and make ourselves sick?

The List Goes On and On

These are just a few of the more serious problems that fluoride is known to cause. There are many more from weakening the bones, destroying our kidneys, dental and skeletal fluorosis and damage to or DNA and immune system. There is a movement going on here and in other countries to get rid of the fluoridation in our water. Many cities have their own anti-fluoride groups and there are some that are organized on a national basis.
